Comune di Castelplanio
Castelplanio has a population of 3,526 inhabitants. It rises up on the left bank of the Esino River, on the lower part of a hill extending from north-east to south-west, at around 305 m. a.s.l. It is about 45 km from Ancona, 30 km from Fabriano and 15 km from Jesi, the most important of the peripheral centres. Some of its divisions, Macine, Borgo Loreto and Pozzetto, instead stand in the valley bottom, at about 125 m. a.s.l., just a short way from the river, and are crossed by streams that flow there (fosso del Maltempo or di Rosora a Macine, fosso Costaccino and fosso delle Lame in Borgo Loreto, torrent Fossato in Pozzetto).
From a geological viewpoint, the hill of Castelplanio is mainly formed of sandstone from the Cainozoic age, whilst the flat land near the river, sedimentary, dates back to the Neozoic period.
From a town planning viewpoint, the main town of Castelplanio gravitates around the mediaeval town, called Castello, even if only traces remain of the original fortifications.
The main street goes through Castelplanio following the ridge of the hill, rising up to the north-east towards Poggio San Marcello, and then going down to the south-west with various twists to the valley bottom, ending up meeting Macine with the provincial road 76. This road, the old Via Clementina was ordered by Pope Clement XII, and is also the axis on which Macine, Borgo Loreto and Pozzetto are located. Piagge, on the other hand, is on a hill further to the east, and is connected to the valley bottom with impervious and difficult roads.
