Comune di Mergo
Mergo is a town of 1,106 inhabitants on the left of the middle valley of the Esino, where the river Vallemani collects the surface waters of the south-east area. The north-eastern area, on the other hand, can be considered as belonging to the Misa basin. The area is widely used for agricultural crops and vines.
Mergo main town is contained within its mediaeval walled belt, almost 400 metres above sea level. It faces out over the twisted course of the Esino that, at the base of the valley, collects the most important communication ways (railway line Ancona-Rome and State road 76). Despite being on a hill, it enjoys the advantages of the valley to which it is connected by means of a brand new road. The town has various sports complexes: a fully-equipped camper van area at the Mergo sports field, skating rinks, tennis courts and bowls fields. For more than ten years, the local first school has pioneered new methods of scholastic research, rebuilding parts of period farming life, from which theatre and film traditions then came about, with much appreciated and well-rewarded participation in events.
